“Multi-titled”, 2017
Oil on canvas, 84” x 96
Over the course of thirteen weeks, I approached the same canvas with a different eye for each stages. My task each week was to completely obliterate the the image that came before, and transform the canvas into something it has never been before. In a sense, each week’s stage can also be called a “finished” piece of work, while the final product is both a final piece as well as visual representation of the layers of finished works that have been covered or concealed by the next stage.
I often worked very viscerally, working with free-association, where I allow a thought or an emotion to transform into an image. Various artists such as Peter Halley and Julie Mehetru were very influential to me at certain stages, while during other weeks I drew inspiration from literatures, science, and even my own writing.
